This is a notice to inform the community that a geophysical survey will be conducted at the site of the former Lejac Residential School starting. This survey is a critical step in the ongoing efforts to uncover the truth and provide closure for those affected by the historical injustices committed at residential schools across Canada.
The Lejac Residential School, which operated from 1922 to 1976, was one of many institutions where Indigenous children were subjected to forced assimilation, harsh conditions, and separation from their families and cultures. The survey aims to identify any unmarked graves and provide crucial information for the community and the broader reconciliation process.
We understand that this news may bring up painful memories and emotions for many. Support services are available for those who need assistance, including counseling and community gatherings to offer comfort and solidarity.
Key Information:
Start Date: Summer of 2024
Survey Area: Grounds of the former Lejac Residential School
Support Services: Available through Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line: 1-866-925-4419
We encourage everyone to respect the survey area during this time and to support each other as we navigate this sensitive and significant undertaking. This effort is part of our commitment to honor the memories of those lost, acknowledge the survivors, and move forward on the path of truth and reconciliation.
